The AOC has unique and exciting opportunities to serve as an Urban Forester Aide during the Summer Internship Program, which offers hands on professional experience, networking, training and most of all exposure to careers in public service, on Capitol Hill.
All students must be U.S. Citizens. Applications will be accepted from students who are at least sixteen (16) years of age by June 30, 2025 AND currently attending a college or university. College students must have a major in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Arboriculture, Horticulture, Natural Resource Management, Biology or other field related to the position being filled. Note: Participation in the Summer Intern Employment Program is limited to a total of three years. Candidates are eligible to participate no more than three years, collectively or consecutively, in the Summer Intern Employment Program. Candidates who have reached the three years in the program will be deemed ineligible to participate this calendar year.
Horticulture Urban Forester Aide This is an exciting role within the Capitol Grounds and Arboretum (CGA), that handles a variety of horticultural projects related to managing tree collections and assisting with other projects that support the management of historic cultural landscape records. In this role, students will learn about plant taxa and classification by collecting tree specimens for mounting and filing into the U.S. National Arboretum Herbarium. Students will also assist the CGA Urban Forester with projects that support the management of historic cultural landscape records. Will collect data and enter the data into the CGA tree inventory system and perform analysis of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data in examining current and historic tree planting plans. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
