The position will be filled at the GS-07 grade level. There is no opportunity for non-competitive conversion to a Federal career or career-conditional position at the conclusion of the internship. Law interns do NOT have the opportunity to be non-competitively converted to positions in the competitive service since attorneys are in the excepted service pursuant to section 213.3102 of 5 CFR. To qualify you must meet the eligibility and education requirements. Your qualifications are evaluated based upon your total amount of COMPLETED education. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Students must be a citizen of the United States or lawfully admitted to the United States as a permanent resident or otherwise authorized to be employed. Current students enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Students must be taking at least half-time course load, as defined by your school and remain in good academic standing in accordance with the Pathways Participant Agreement. The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's (OPMs) basic qualifications requirements. Minimum qualifications for a Student Trainee, GS-0999-07: Master's degree (or higher) or Bachelor's degree with one year of graduate work. Students must have completed one year of law school by the beginning of the 2024 summer. Students must be continuing in legal studies throughout the summer and/or into the Fall of 2024 to be eligible. Prior graduates and students graduating in the Spring of 2024 are not eligible. This position has Selective Placement Factor that will be used to differentiate qualified candidates. Selective Placement Factor: This position requires the pursuit of a degree in the following field: Juris Doctor or LL.B. (Note: The transcripts you submit must indicate that you are currently pursuing a degree in this field or your application will be ruled incomplete). This is a temporary position NTE (not to exceed) 10 weeks; may be extended. *NOTE: Failure to provide transcripts will result in you being rated ineligible for this position. If substituting education for experience, at the GS-09 level, you must possess a master's or equivalent degree OR 2 full years of progressively higher graduate education leading to such a degree, OR LL.B or J.D. if related.
As a Student Trainee, you will actively participate in on-the-job training and progressively challenging assignments that relate to your academic program, career goals, and the needs of the agency.
As the Student Trainee (Legal) for the Office of General Counsel or Office of Counsel, you will:
Perform legal research using commercially available legal research software and publicly available research tools to investigate questions of law raised in response to matters brought to the Office of General Counsel or Office of Counsel for action.
Perform fact-finding research on assignments assigned by staff attorneys on a variety of legal subjects.
Search legal documents, historical files, and other legal resources on questions relating to myriad of legal subjects.
Prepare legal memoranda and other written documents in accordance with general law school standards.
Verbally brief attorneys and clients regarding results of research and analysis as requested by staff attorneys.
Assist in drafting and commenting on litigation materials, and legal opinions.
Assist attorneys with transactional reviews and litigation tasks.
Assist with preparation of data, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint slides.
Assist with the analysis of data.
