Job Description:
The Staff Podiatrist is responsible for management of diagnostic, preventive, and/or therapeutic podiatric foot and ankle services including clinical setting, minor and major operative procedures. The applicant is a recognized expert in dealing with a variety of difficult lower extremity wound, medical and orthopedic cases. Maintains clinical and administrative records as required. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: ABFAS Board Certification for foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide comprehensive Podiatric care services as well as follow-up care of existing conditions and management of emergency conditions. 2. Provide Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Podiatric Services, including hospital rounds. 3. Perform Podiatric Surgery in the minor surgery room. 4. Conduct weekly outpatient and inpatient clinics. 5. Provide non-operative Podiatric hospital rounds for Podiatric patients. 6. Document services through appropriate, notes, such as History and Physical, Progress notes, Operative notes, and Discharge Summaries. 7. Critique Morbidity and Mortality information and documentation. 8. Alternate On-Call coverage with other VAMC Staff Podiatrist(s). 9. Educate physicians, staff, residents, and students in the principles and therapy of complex and basic Podiatric Services/Surgery. 10. Participate in clinical research protocols either developed locally in cooperation with other faculty or developed at other institutions for multi-center studies. 11. Assist residents and students in selecting, developing, and preparing abstracts for presentation at meetings. 12. Perform the administrative duties involved in the proper functioning of the Podiatric Section. These will include but are not limited to: a) Supervising the senior podiatry students and pediatric residents from accredited Podiatry Medical Schools and approved Podiatric Residency Programs. b) Teaching of medical students and residents of surgery and medicine. c) Developing and reviewing policies for the Podiatry Section d) Ensuring that JCAHO, Safety, AAMI, OSHA, VA and other agency regulations are being met. e) Ensuring continuing education of staff under his/her supervision.
