Job Description:

This position is located in the Environmental Health Services within the Shiprock Service Unit, Shiprock, NM. The purpose of this position is to provide consultation, coordinate and establish injury prevention and control program goals. The position serves as a primary advisor in the assessment of program effectiveness, interpretation of injury data, conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes or modifications to injury data.
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Example of Education: Successful completion of a science-based bachelor's degree or higher involving a major study in an academic field related to environmental health that includes separate coursework in the three (3) fundamental areas of epidemiology, statistical methods, and injury prevention. Examples of coursework: Environmental health technical topics of air quality, food protection, occupational health & safety, water & waste water, solid & hazardous waste management, injury and disease prevention. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Must submit Transcripts. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-11 Grade Level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Establishing injury prevention and control program goals and objectives through data analysis and surveillance system, using judgement in making decisions based on injury-specific research, data collection, analysis, interpretation, evaluation and reporting, in the application of state-of-the-art public health approaches in the field of injury prevention. OR Completion of three (3) years progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, in a field that is directly related to the work of this position. OR Possess a combination of education and experience when combined meet the minimum qualifications. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for the GS-11 grade level. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Serves as the District Injury Prevention and Control Specialist at an Indian Health Service Unit facility within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, Division of Environmental Health Services. Major activities include establishing injury prevention and control program goals and objectives through the application of injury data analysis from the injury data surveillance system in the overall planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation directed at reducing injury morbidity and mortality. Provides technical assistance in the prioritizing, planning, monitoring and evaluation of service unit injury prevention and control program components. Collaborates, coordinates, and communicates in networking injury prevention and control resources with appropriate local, state and federal agencies.
