The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS),is accepting applications for Summer 2025 Student Volunteers. BLS is the principle fact-finding agency for the federal government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. BLS is an independent national statistical agency that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data to the American public, the U.S. Congress, other federal agencies, state and local governments, business, and labor.
Data Scientist: Skills and majors: Data scientist proficient in manipulating data in Python. Experience with UX design, creating visualizations, and working with APIs. Interest in economics and economic measurement a plus. Hours: At least 20 hours per week for at least 10 weeks. Security Specialist: Skills and Majors: Analytical skills Detail oriented Problem-solving Initiative Willingness to learn Security Management Homeland Security Management Criminal Justice Public Safety Hours: At least 20 hours per week for at least 10 weeks Program Analyst Skills and Majors: Any major is fine. Good writing and oral communication skills. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Skill in web publishing, social media, or graphic design is desired but not required. Knowledge of or interest in public relations, public communications, media relations, or publishing. In order to be eligible for this opportunity you must be able to obtain academic credit from your institution OR a third-party stipend of at least $15.00 per hour or higher if the locality you are selected for has a higher minimum wage than $15.00. Interns will work with higher graded technical and professional staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study. Assignments are designed to provide orientation, training, and familiarization with the work processes of BLS. Duties for each series are listed below: Data Scientist Duties: Work with a team of professional economists to develop a coding approach that generates a prototype for a series of public-facing data and graphic summaries. Develop a coding approach that generates a prototype for public-facing data and graphic summaries Security Specialist Duties: Assist physical security specialist(s) with the writing of physical security protocols and procedures. Assist physical security specialist(s) in surveying the operation of physical security systems, including access control, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems. Assist physical security specialist(s) with the development of training on security awareness, emergency response procedures, and the proper use of security equipment. Conduct guided research of new technologies and methodologies to advance physical security capabilities and efficiency. Program Analyst Duties: Develop communications strategies for internal agency staff. Develop communications strategies for external customers. Create social media campaigns. Develop sustainable document-management strategy for large volume of office procedures, documents, and intranet site. Information Technology (IT) Duties: Performs basic tasks using equipment or software to support IT Specialists or other higher-grade personnel. Carries out specific tasks of limited scope and complexity which are generally minor phases of a larger project or assignment utilizing basic methods, techniques, and procedures. Participates in the development and maintenance of data bases. Checks data for completeness, validity, and consistency; corrects erroneous data. Revises and/or updates existing programs per instructions. Assists with the troubleshooting and maintenance of computer related communications services.
