About the Position: Serves as a Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Riley Public Affairs Office. Responsible for the content, accuracy, format and distribution of informational products for public dissemination (inter)nationally, regionally and locally.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Maintaining public websites with engaging content such as: social media; 2) Preparing communication materials for public dissemination such as: news releases, feature articles and news stories, press kits, pamphlets, brochures, and infographics; 3) Escorting media representatives for on-post engagements and 4) Capturing video content to edit and release to the public. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Public Affairs/Public Relations or Media Affairs. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Performs a variety of public affairs, communication and engagement duties in media relations, community relations, social media, newspaper and websites.
Maintains contacts (and establishes new contacts, as needed) with regional and local media representatives.
Assists collateral public affairs personnel and commanders of subordinate activities in dealing with local issues. Assists in handling press queries, press visits and distribution of approved media releases.
Coordinates with units and organizations to plan and develop website content and social media posts that provide up-to-date and relevant information.
Uses web-based social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, YouTube and other Army-approved sites to support the communication objectives of the command.
Conducts briefings/tours to groups, schools and organizations about Fort Riley.
Assists the Command (Internal) Information section in the execution of the command information program. Researches and writes articles, news releases and feature stories.
Reviews articles for compliance with professional journalistic standards and command directives.
