GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities to legislate, appropriate, and oversee the Federal government for the benefit of the American people. GAO, commonly referred to as the investigative arm of Congress, or the congressional watchdog, is independent and nonpartisan. GAO assists Congress in making informed decisions by providing information on policy and program issues, as well as by providing recommendations to make government more effective and responsive.
Band IIA Must be a full-time or part-time GAO employee on a permanent appointment. In addition, applicants must meet either of the two following criteria by May 18, 2025 (effective date of the promotions): (1) have a minimum of 104 weeks of GAO experience, equivalent to at least the next lower band level (PE-I, PA-I, PT-II, PT-I, AC-III, AC-IV), in a position focused on conducting research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, or program evaluations; or (b) have 78 weeks of GAO experience, equivalent to at least the next lower band level (PE-I, PA-I, PT-II, PT-I, AC-III, AC-IV), in a position focused on conducting research, quantitative and qualitative analysis, or program evaluations, and have a minimum of 52 weeks of directly related work experience prior to starting work at GAO by May 18, 2025.
As a Senior Auditor, PE, 0511, 21, your typical work assignments may include the following: As an individual contributor, develops design matrix and researchable questions independently or in conjunction with engagement team members and a methodologist. Collects and analyzes data from a variety of sources including interviews with agency managers and program officials. Reviews program documents, reports and data. Selects, refines, organizes and presents factual information and analysis in support of engagement objectives. In collaboration with other engagement team members and based on consultation with the AIC and Assistant Director (AD), decides on form, content, scope, and depth of analysis. Evaluates and analyzes data to determine relevance and reliability through referencing and indexing. Develops findings and recommendations and prepares written products that provide factual and analytical information in a clear, balanced manner that meet the needs of congressional clients and conform to all audit requirements and quality standards. As a Senior Auditor on an engagement team, serves as a coach and mentor to Band I Auditor and PDP staff. As assigned, may serve on an engagement team conducting financial audits including the consolidated financial statement audit of the Federal government (involving up to 35 federal agencies). When serving as the AIC, typically leads engagements of low or medium scope and complexity. Oversees all aspects of design, data collection and analysis, message development and report writing and ensures the quality and value of the final product. Prioritizes the work to ensure milestones are met. Assigns work to team members to include expectations and deadlines for completing assignments. Coaches, mentors and trains team members. Ensures coordination with stakeholders.
