GAO supports the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities to legislate, appropriate, and oversee the Federal government for the benefit of the American people. GAO, commonly referred to as the investigative arm of Congress, or the congressional watchdog, is independent and nonpartisan. GAO assists Congress in making informed decisions by providing information on policy and program issues, as well as by providing recommendations to make government more effective and responsive.
Basic Qualification Requirements: The Mathematical Statistician Series, 1529 and the Statistics Series, 1530 both have positive education requirements. AND Minimum Qualification Requirements: In addition to the education requirement, you must have one year (52 weeks) of GAO experience equivalent to the next lower band level (PE-IIA, PT-II, PT-III, PA-II, MS-I) in a position demonstrating experience performing sampling, estimation, and other statistical analysis independently, to meet overall objectives by May 18, 2025 (effective date of promotions).
At the Band IIB, the incumbent serves as either a Sr. Mathematical Statistician or Senior Statistician providing consultative services to engagement teams and advising in the selection and implementation of appropriate statistical methodologies for engagements in accordance with GAO and professional statistical standards. Duties of Band IIB staff involve, but are not limited to, the following: Oversees the design, researchable question development, data collection and analysis, message development, and reporting writing; and ensures the quality and value of the final product. Advises on data collection methods for engagements. Selects, refines, organizes and presents factual information and analysis in support of engagement objectives. Collaborates with engagement team members on the scope, form, content and depth of analysis. Contributes to primary data collection. Evaluates and analyzes data to determine relevance and reliability. In conjunction with team members, develops findings and recommendations and prepares products that provide factual and analytical information in a clear, balanced manner that meets the needs of congressional clients. Performs statistical analyses, interprets and presents statistical results, and advises staff on matters relating to statistical issues, data analysis and evidence. Ensures products meet GAO standards for quality and are in conformance with policy and requirements.
