Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-07) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. Specialized Experience Defined As: Managing and scheduling appointments for a Senior Leader or department head; using office automation software and ability to research, interpret and apply clerical and administrative regulations; performing review of correspondence to ensure compliance with regulations, grammar, format and special policies for correspondence are followed; advising secretaries and action officers in subordinate units on such matters as the application of procedures, correspondence and reporting requirements; maintaining Senior Leader appointment calendars, scheduling conferences/meetings, maintaining files, and making travel arrangements; greeting and interacting with high-level visitors to the Senior Leader; working with subordinate secretaries to schedule events or meetings with the Senior Leader. A minimum typing proficiency of 40 WPM is required. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social) is qualifying. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience. Time In Grade: To be considered for the GS-08, applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-07 or higher in the Federal service.
Provides services as an office assistant performing administrative and clerical duties in support of the work of the Director of a DFAS Organization.
Prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, and other documents from handwritten drafts using office automation equipment, ensuring correct grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and format.
Keep supervisor’s calendar and schedule appointments and meetings based on personal knowledge of workload and current issues without prior approval.
Receive visitors and phone calls, determine nature of request, and refer only those contacts needing staff attention. Route calls and visitors based upon knowledge of programs and operations.
Read and process incoming correspondence and material, identifying which items need to be brought to the attention of the supervisor, referred to appropriate staff, rerouted to other organizations, or handled personally.
