Purpose of this position is to serve as a Medical Laboratory Aid to perform specific non-professional laboratory tasks in support of higher grade Medical Technicians and Technologists to meet the mission of the Clinical Laboratory.
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): For GS-3: Successful completion of (a) a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (b) 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or biological science. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-3: 6 months of general experience and/or 1 year above high school education with course listed in Basic Qualifications above. General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Performs specimen collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques following standard laboratory policies. Instructs patients on properly collecting urine samples. Assists with maintenance and recording of rejected requests and specimens on appropriate log sheets. Assists in general laboratory by preparing specimens for analysis, labeling specimen tubes, accessioning requests to the LIS or manual work logs, preparing laboratory apparatus and equipment for use by technicians and technologists. Prepares specimens for send out to referral facilities by preparing appropriate requisition for the reference laboratory both manually and by computer entry, assists with maintenance of send out log sheets, ensures specimens are appropriately preserved and packaged according to procedural guidelines. Assists in Microbiology section by plating cultures to appropriate media optimal growth and isolation of microorganisms. Prepares slides for gram stain and AFB stain for interpretation by the Technologists. Assists with filing reports, delivery of completed reports to medical records and wards for charting to the patient(s) chart, and other duties as assigned.
