About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 months. Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic Accomplishment (Ph.D. preferred) in Philosophy with demonstrated academic accomplishment in the Philosophy and Ethics of Technology, the Philosophy and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI), or related ethical topics is preferred. 2) Demonstrated ability to engage in research and positively contribute to the scholarship of tech ethics, AI ethics, and related fields, with the potential to coordinate research programs between philosophy and applied AI laboratories. 3) Ability to teach in-person core-curriculum and elective course in Philosophy with a strong emphasis on ethics, technology, and their implications in military contexts. 4) Demonstrated Ability to work effectively across disciplines and potential to develop and influence both cadets' and master's level faculty in the rapidly evolving intersection of technology, ethics, and military applications. 5) Ability to mentor cadets and assist in their development as future Army Officers.
Coordinate a collaborative research program between West Point faculty and the Army's Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (AI2C) at Carnegie Mellon University, supervising cadet research and liaising between AI2C and the department.
Teach an undergraduate philosophy course in the core program of the Department of Law and Philosophy at the United States Military Academy with a strong emphasis on ethics and the morality of warfare.
Develop tech ethics-focused curriculum for potential inclusion in the core curriculum or philosophy electives, addressing critical areas such as AI ethics, data privacy, and the ethical use of advanced technologies in military operations.
Engage and contribute to scholarly discussions and research in tech ethics as it relates to military applications and Just War Theory.
Instruct elective courses within Law and Philosophy major emphasizing ethics, the morality of warfare, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies in military contexts.
Support the personal growth and professional development of cadets in and out of the classroom as a role model for future leaders of the Nation.
