Job Description:

The Dentist will serve as the Supervisory Dentist at the Lancaster/Antelope Valley Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC). The incumbent will supervise staff and assist the Sepulveda Associate Chief. The duties (75-80%) include a full scope of general dental procedures. Interacts with VA staff, VA Office of Dentistry, affiliated institutions, and Veterans. Serves as the project lead to enhance access to care, modernize clinics, and achieve goals in alignment with the facility's goals.
Dentist Basic Requirements Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates. Degree: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Residency or Comparable Experience: Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ Licensure or Registration: Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Residents (Independent and Integrated Programs): Graduates of approved United States and Canadian schools of dentistry must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or, for integrated programs, meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active current licensure. English Language Proficiency: Dentists, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification is required if conscious sedation is performed. Preferred Experience: Has completed an American Dental Association approved one or two-year dental general practice residency or has three (3) or more years of professional practice clinical experience. Specific Duties: Responsible for the Lancaster/Antelope Valley Dental Clinic administration in compliance with Veteran Health Affairs, Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and Dental Services Directives, Policies and Procedures. Recommending and sustaining Service-level policy initiatives to ensure compliance with The Joint Commission's standards. Assists with recommending staffing, space, equipment, and other resources needed by the Service, based on data. Analyze Dental Service reports and present reports to the Associate Chief. Review, analyze Dental Quality Indicators' Report, and taking appropriate measures to meet the targets. Assists with recommending staffing, space, equipment, and other resources needed by the Service. Determining the qualifications and competence of personnel who provide patient care and are not licensed independent practitioners. Assessing and improving the performance of care and services with respect to access to care, quality indicators and productivity. Maintaining quality control programs, as appropriate. Orienting and providing in-service training and education of all persons in the Service in collaboration with staff of other services. Assists with oversight of Care in the Community/Consultation review process. Designating a person to act in his/her absence so that administrative direction is always provided. Establishing and assists the Associate Chief Dental Service in implementing policies, and other policies of the Service and GLAHCS. Evaluating and implementing, as feasible, any recommendations from RVAHCS committees and consultants Clinical Duties (85% - 90%) Providing direct patient care and serve as clinical attending dentist, consistent with his/her clinical privileges. Clinical duties inclusive of supervision of the dental staff at the Lancaster/Antelope Valley Community Based Outpatient Dental Clinic. The scope of care, generally, include: Oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Perform routine restoration of teeth. Perform routine extractions of teeth. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns, and fixed bridge work. Perform routine endodontic procedures.
