About the Position: Serves as a deckhand on both large and small tow boats and derrickboats with the United States Army Engineer (USACE) District, Huntington Regional Rivers Repair Fleet, Light Capacity Fleet Unit with duty location Old Hickory, TN.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Deckhand Derrickboat without more than normal supervision. Make minor repairs of machinery, handles roping for towing, utilizes various tools, and prepares paint surfaces to be painted. Operates small boats. Keeps lines, tools, paint brushes, etc. clean and in proper places. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability To Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicle) Operation of Motor Vehicles Reliability and Dependability as a Deckhand Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: Exerts physical effort in doing such task as frequently lifting and moving objects weighing approximately 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside in all types of weather and temperatures; works near moving machinery and swinging objects; is in danger of falling on a wet and/or slippery surfaces and of being snagged by ropes and cables; does heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, etc., frequently; and is in danger of drowning.
Handle and fasten mooring and towing lines during docking, mooring and departure operations.
Ensure that lines are properly tied to docks or floating plant which tug is tending. Snubs and ties lines properly to minimize breakage and to secure plant safely.
Care for, renew, and splice rope and makes rope fenders.
Perform rigging and other work associated with pile driving activities including using either a drop or air hammer.
Perform general vessel maintenance duties and keeps boat in ship shape condition. Maintains, repairs, cleans, and paints the deck, hull, superstructure, and storage areas.
Keep lines, tools, paint brushes, etc. clean and in proper places.
Assist with dismantling the main engines, auxiliary engines, pumps, compressors, generators and other machinery as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
