This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), VA Medical Center (VAMC), within the Office of the Medical Center Director. This position serves as the Chief of Staff at the North Texas VAMC. The incumbent exercises line authority for multiple administrative and allied health services and sections. *Relocation Incentive is authorized
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Clinical & Medical Experience Medical Degree (MD or DO) required, typically board-certified in a clinical specialty. Experience in direct patient care, preferably within a VHA or similar system. Knowledge of evidence-based medicine, quality improvement, and population health. Leadership & Administrative Experience Prior experience as a Chief of Staff, Associate COS, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), or similar senior leadership role in a hospital or healthcare system. Proven leadership in managing physicians, clinical staff, and multidisciplinary teams. Experience with strategic planning, operational oversight, and change management in a healthcare setting. Familiarity with VA policies, procedures, and regulations. Healthcare Operations & Policy Knowledge Understanding of VHA policies, regulations, and organizational structure. Experience in resource management, including budgeting, staffing, and capital planning. Knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, and patient safety initiatives. Strong grasp of credentialing, privileging, and compliance standards for medical staff. Performance & Quality Improvement Experience leading clinical quality improvement projects and implementing best practices. Knowledge of VA performance metrics, including SAIL (Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning). Proficiency in data-driven decision-making to improve patient outcomes. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement Ability to work closely with executive leadership, department heads, and external stakeholders. Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance patient care and streamline operations. Strong communication and conflict resolution skills to manage diverse teams effectively. Veteran-Centered Care Experience Knowledge of the unique healthcare needs of veterans, including military-related conditions and mental health issues. Familiarity with community care programs, VA partnerships, and veteran benefits. Additional Considerations Prior experience in VHA leadership roles (e.g., Deputy COS, Service Chief, Network roles, VISN leadership). Fellowship in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) or similar credential. Experience in teaching, mentoring, or academic affiliations with medical schools. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of clinical activities, clinical staff and administrative oversight. Primary duties include but are not limited to: Formulates and recommends plans for a comprehensive program of medical care. Develops the requirements of staff, facilities, equipment and supplies needed to support an integrated program, utilizing necessary reviews and controls. Appraises the effectiveness of the various medical programs in meeting the needs of patient care. Promotes the development of health care professionals through counseling, mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment. Works with the Executive Leadership Team to ensure that facility programs reflect the mission and priorities of VHA and VA. Accomplishes clinical program goals consistent with available resources and participate in the allocation of facility resources and modification of programs to best meet the needs of the Veteran population. Monitors and promotes compliance with VA regulations and professional standards pertaining to outside professional activities and ethical conduct. Creates and promotes a High Reliability Organization, fostering an environment of system oriented continuous quality improvement, within which program and quality of care effectiveness are evaluated. Provide oversight of the credentialing and privileging facility to include oversight of regulatory and legal issue, monitoring medical staff and other licensed independent practitioner's compliance and quality of practice.
