Job Description:

This position will serve as an academic primary care provider (PCP) in a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) with a teamlet comprised of a provider (MD/DO), RN, LVN, and a Clerk. The team will provide primary and acute care services in an outpatient setting to include chronic disease management and preventive health care. The academic PACT will also include resident physicians.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) at the Clinical Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate, or Professor level. Teaching of medical students, residents and fellows in primary care medicine requires an active UCLA faculty appointment. Physical Requirements: The work is largely office based and in a sedentary setting. No manual labor is required above ordinary situations. Incumbent must be capable of using a computer given that all clinical charting is electronic.

Functions: The primary function is the provision of primary and acute care services in an outpatient setting to include management of acute illness, chronic disease management, and preventive health. The Primary Care Provider (PCP) will demonstrate clinical competence in history taking; examination; diagnosis; therapeutic ability; effectiveness in emergencies; patient management consultations and record keeping. The PCP will provide same day care for patients and provide coverage for other PACT providers when needed. The PCP will provide supervision and training to resident physicians and medical students. The PCP will provide supervision collaboration with mid-level providers (Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants). Participation in Process Improvement/Quality Assurance projects and other administrative duties as assigned. The physician will further support the VA mission thru participation in applicable VA national, VISN, and local quality and process improvement initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to, performance measures & monitors, and systems redesign/advanced clinical access projects. There are administrative tasks that involve patient management and maintenance of treatment records in primary care that are essential to the VA mission of healthcare. The incumbent will work with supervisory and frontline staff in his/her own and other service lines to foster and improve the operation of the section and related system wide Work Schedule: This is a full-time position. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; if evening and/or Saturday clinics are established, there may be some coverage required during those times. Location: The primary location of activity will be at the West Los Angeles Primary and Ambulatory Care Center (PACC)), but travel to other sites within the Greater Los Angeles VA catchment area may be needed on occasion.
