About the Position: The incumbent serves as a trainer for lower grade scientists and peers on current and new technological advances within the Organization, provides in-depth understanding of growth, pathogenesis, dissemination methods, preservation and transportation of biothreat agents of concern.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Microbiologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal Service which includes (1) Assisting in virus production in support of the organization; and (2) Working on a team performing experimentation and demonstrations with pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria and other microbes. Specialized Experience GS-13: One of year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal Service which includes (1) Experience working with biocontainment conditions and precautions under which infectious agents can be safely manipulated. (2) Advising on design modifications of Biological Safety Levels 1 through Level 3 laboratories. (3) Inspecting and assessing risk of exposure to personnel and property of biological agents; and (4) Developing policy, procedures and guidance that incorporate standards into Biosafety programs. GS-12: Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Biology Communications Scientific Research Technical Competence
Incumbent serves as Senior Microbiologist conducting research studies, formulating and conducting systematic research investigations.
Serves as a trainer for the microbiology section, developing and implementing training plans, training material and mentoring lower grade scientists and microbiology interns in areas of emphasis.
Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) on missions directed at training CBE (Chemical, Biological, and Explosives) sampling teams.
Incumbent assures the procurement of all small and large dollar purchases (including all services and contracts) necessary to ensure the proper function of all mobile platforms and training efforts.
Incumbent is directly responsible for the operation and method development of analytical equipment.
Performs any of a variety of responsible [equipment specialist] operations in laboratory and field settings.
