Job Description:

This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent Tenant Services Division, Carpentry Branch. The incumbent serves as a Wood Crafter (CNC) Leader, leading WG-10 Wood Crafters and a Wood Crafter (CNC) WG-11 operator of Gravograph New Hermes signage machine in making and repairing high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture.

You must meet the screen-out factor required for this position: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This includes providing advice and guidance to workers engaged in wood crafting work (e.g., CNC, making and repairing high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture).
Leader Responsibilities As a working leader, the incumbent is responsible for the following functions and duties: Passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started by distributing the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the work group; working along with other workers and setting the pace; demonstrating proper work methods; ensuring that needed plans, blueprints, materials and tools are available and that needed materials are obtained; obtaining necessary information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work shift; maintaining current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions and other directives (for example, technical orders to be able to answer questions of other workers); seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy; checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines have been followed; urging or advising other workers to follow supervisor’s instructions and to meet deadlines; reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and answering supervisors’ questions on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning the need for additional on-the-job training for individual employees). The incumbent is responsible for utilizing a thorough knowledge of and compliance with applicable AOC and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner and to initiate or take corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Provides or receives training, either on the job or through classroom training, to ensure that required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is utilized. Carpentry Projects The incumbent will create designs and fabricate high-grade cabinetry, furniture, woodwork and signs via various CNC machinery (New Hermes Gravograph, Epilogue, Direct Color Systems UV LED printer, Techno CNC Router). The New Hermes and additional Gravograph 8000 laser engraving machines and devices utilize CNC capabilities to produce, logos, signage and symbols, utilizing discs, flash-drives and internet images. Specialized software includes Gravostyle 7 and Color Byte RFP for the signage machine, Microsoft Paint and CorelDRAW for graphics creation and TurboCad Deluxe and CAD software to create machine codes for custom router designs. In some instances, the Wood Crafter may download from specialized websites, such as Google SketchUp and generates detailed plans, specifications and schematics to manufacture unique furniture for Congressional Members. The computer navigation to upload specifications and manufacture the signs, woodwork and cabinetry is more complex than site-based digital controlled equipment or stand-alone tools and warrants classification to WG-11 for Wood Crafters assigned these responsibilities on a regular and recurring basis. Crafts High Quality Decorative Woodwork The position selects, cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles and decorates wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines and techniques to create superior and structurally reliable woodwork which requires exact fitting and close weight, pressure and size tolerances to construct specialty furniture via CNC machinery or at a work bench. Woodwork examples include cabinetry, furniture, bookcases, countertops, wainscot paneling, rostrums, podiums and reception counters.
