Job Description:
These positions will be located in the following mission teams: Defense Capabilities & Management; Education, Workforce and Income Security; and Health Care. As a Senior Communications Analyst (Written), you will be responsible for assisting in the development and production of reports, correspondence, testimonies, and other products.
Minimum Qualification Requirements: Applicants must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower band level, or equivalent to PT-II, PE-IIA, CS-II or GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service, which has equipped the applicant with the skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience in conducting quality control tasks on written communications on complex and high-risk assignments to include reviewing and analyzing draft products prior to publication, ensuring documents are in alignment with federal and organizational standards and coaching staff to develop clear and concise written content. Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate for this position has extensive experience in the Communications Analyst (CA) role, using a combination of teamwork, critical thinking, and exceptional writing skills to help communicate complex or technical findings clearly and concisely. This candidate's experience includes the breadth of GAO products-including briefings; correspondence; letter reports; testimonies; special publications; and GAO-wide products, such as those related to Duplication and High Risk. It may also include experience advising teams in the use of unique product features, such as 2-page Highlights, sidebars, and non-standard appendixes. The ideal candidate also understands and expertly assists teams in meeting GAO's reporting standards and core values, such as those related to accuracy, balance, and clarity. In addition, the candidate has experience drafting text for Highlights and Fast Facts using Plain Language. This ideal candidate possesses soft skills (such as listening, flexibility, problem solving, and empathy) and successfully applies them to influence others over whom the candidate does not have direct authority. This candidate has helped mentor newly hired CAs and/or teaches or coaches other GAO staff to write and review drafts in accordance with GAO standards. Finally, the ideal candidate can successfully manage a large and dynamic workload with almost complete independence, while proactively helping others anticipate and avoid potential obstacles.
The incumbent supports the team by helping to analyze data and develop the message of engagements, as well as revising sections of drafts and using team work papers. As a Senior Communications Analyst (Written), CS-1001-3, your typical work assignments may include the following: Provide expert-level written communications support to multiple engagement teams or individuals working on complex and high-risk engagements. Provide expert-level review and revise draft products to improve coherence, logical flow, clarity, and adherence to GAO quality standards. Work with engagement teams or individuals to draft products using Plain Language to help communicate GAO's complex findings to the general public in written products as well as social media posts. Review documents to ensure all elements of a finding are present for products with recommendations and provide input on the sufficiency of the level of evidence for those products. Serve as a recognized resource and provide coaching on all matters involving the written content of GAO products, including clear and concise writing.
