The Syracuse VAMC is seeking a BC/BE Lead Hospitalist to care for our veterans.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Prior Hospitalist experience desired. Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties of Physician Assistant under normal and emergent conditions. Moderate lifting 15-44 lbs and over with assistive devices, heavy carrying of 15-44 lbs and over with assistive devices; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, both hands required, walking or standing up to 4 hours per day; repeated bending up to 1-2 hours per day; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable; hearing aid permitted.

The Physician that is board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or an ABIM Subspecialty to serve as the Assistant Chief of the Medicine Service. Duties would include administrative responsibilities and 20% clinical time (to maintain clinical currency and privileges). The incumbent would work in conjunction with other members of the Hospitalist team to provide evidence-based patient-centered care to our Veterans. Additionally, they will help lead daily patient care rounds and discharge planning with members of the interdisciplinary team. The ideal candidate demonstrates sound decision-making skills in both clinical and administrative areas. In addition, the incumbent serves as a Program Site Director to Internal Medicine Residents, Medical Students and the Chief Residents of Internal Medicine and Quality and Safety. The ideal candidate collaborates, guides, and supports all physician staff, residents, and medical students. Serves as the Acting Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) in the absence of the Associate Chief of Staff or the Chief of Staff (COS). Participates in and attends medical center committees and meetings as assigned by the Associate Chief of the Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff. Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) or System Redesign projects, as assigned by the ACOS. Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center. Performs other administrative and clinical duties as assigned by the ACOS. Responsible for the completion of physician OPPE/FPPE and other administrative functions including Proficiency Report completion. Administrative duties include: -Monday through Friday coverage to allow effective interaction with daytime program staff -Oversees 5 Teams, responds to acute issues. -Oversees hospitalist/nocturnist schedule. -Oversees CRQS residency program - Oversees clinical training of hospitalist teams and trainees assigned to these teams. - Manages quality initiates associated with patient care - Manages implementation & sustainment of clinical pathways (including, but not limited to, CHF, COPD, Alcohol, Sepsis, Joint, OUD). -Program Site Director for Graduate Medical Education Health Professional Trainees (Chief Resident, CRQS, medical students). The incumbent is expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. The incumbent is expected to adhere to stated policies and provide timely documentation of clinical notes (e.g. H&P, consult review, discharge summaries, medication reconciliation, etc). In addition, the incumbent is expected to coordinate and communicate the treatment plan with other Hospitalists, primary care providers, nursing, social workers, administrative staff, pharmacists, and other subspecialists and ancillary staff. The Hospitalist Physician will help to ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resourceful and efficient manner. Must be have an appointment as a faculty member of the academic affiliate, SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital. May at times be assigned as Acting Associate Chief of Staff as needed.
