The primary purpose of the Licensed Practical/License Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN) is to perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the veteran. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State [ ] agency and/or [accredited by] the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] at the time the program was completed by the applicant. Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest. Recognizes and appropriately responds to breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies, promptly reporting to appropriate personnel for corrective action. Major Duties: FUNCTIONS OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: (must be unit specific to the area assigned) The Outpatient Specialty Clinics LPN/LVN functions as a team member under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. The incumbent is adaptable and prioritizes requests and adjusts care in response to clinic flow needs. He/she performs patient centered care to Veterans throughout the lifespan, completes clinical reminders and medication reconciliation as clinically indicated, and provides medical assistive care and administrative support when needed. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to observe, identify, and respond to the patients' need for nursing care, recognizing deviations from baseline. Nursing activities may include but are not limited to medication administration, wound care treatments, home meter downloading, urological procedures, suture and staple removal, capillary blood glucose test, equipment assisted care, electrocardiograms, cast removal, dermatological procedures, and use of safe patient handling equipment. He/she is responsible for patient education and documentation in nursing clinics and medication administration. The incumbent will deploy proactive customer service and active listening and will also engage in rapport building, limit setting, and de-escalation as applicable. The Specialty Care LPN/LVN is expected to work in multiple clinics and areas and with multiple services within the duty station as needed to meet patient volume and acuity demands. Staff designated as Intermittent will provide a minimum of one (1) shift of availability per pay period to management in advance upon request.
