Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.

FOR GS-3: You must possess six months of general work experience AND three months of specialized work experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of a park ranger which is directly related to the work described in the vacancy announcement. Examples of specialized experience may include: Performing trail maintenance; maintaining grounds and/or property; or providing relevant information to visitors/customers. -OR- Education: completed one year of education above high school that included at least 6 semester (9 quarter) hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources, -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Examples of specialized experience may include: experience operating and maintaining various power tools and equipment, experience doing work that requires physical exertion and experience following safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures and following written and oral instructions. -OR- Education: completed two years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester (18 quarter) hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. (transcripts required) FOR GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisted and/or worked under the direct supervision of a higher graded employee performing duties that required the basic knowledge of land management programs, natural or cultural history, fish or wildlife habitat characteristics, techniques of resource protection and use, recreational use of lands, enforcement of regulations, or fire prevention techniques and/or fire suppression methods; operated basic tools required to perform maintenance; used a computer to type, record, and/or retrieve data. -OR- Education: completed four years of study above high school leading to a bachelor`s degree with 24 semester/36 quarter hours in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rock surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.
Ensures visitor contact is conducted in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner. Advises visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
Make surveys to locate or collect various types of information, such as soil erosion, deer transects, and water or air quality, that require the application of judgment and knowledge of particular program areas.
Patrols and inspects facilities ensuring compliance with rules pertaining to parking, campfires, noise level, sanitation, and safety; bringing violations to the attention of visitors and, if appropriate, issues notices of violations.
Presents a variety of formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
Assists in day-to-day operations at a visitor center or area that provides facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and/or specialized recreational opportunities.
Prepares recreation areas for visitor use, to include planning, operation, and maintenance. Ensures facilities and customer use areas are free of visible safety hazards. Performs routine facility maintenance and repair.
Performs building and area security patrol and monitors security and fire alarm systems.
