This position is located at the VA Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. The person in this position is a working leader in charge of all work performed by the Air Conditioning, Heating, Ventilation, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) shop.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT (Screen Out): This position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Universal Technician Certification. This is in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. NOTE: Please provide a copy of your certification. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Requires physical effort for a full eight-hour day. Must physically exert themselves, at times, by working in confined spaces where they must lift, bend, stoop, and crawl. Performs tasks overhead for short durations. Climbs ladders and works in/above ceilings and at ceiling height. Must be always physically and mentally alert. Requires lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, and steadying adjustments or repairs. May require kneeling, bending, squatting, and reaching while in cramped or awkward positions. Works on ladders, scaffolds, and platforms. Must carry items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses hoists, holders, and pulleys to move large compressor, condensers, and chillers. Works in closed spaces and temperature extremes. Work is performed both inside and outside in unusually dirty, dusty, and greasy areas. Exposed to cuts, bruises, and electrical shocks.
Major duties and responsibilities include: Maintains and operates all heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration system throughout the medical center Repairs large industrial air conditioning equipment Ensures AC Equipment Mechanics follow proper procedures and meet deadlines Instructs workers on proper work methods, ensures work is properly allocated, checks work progress Check works performed by other workers for completeness and adherence with applicable codes Ensures proper functioning of ice machines, drinking fountains, ventilation units, louvers, walk-in and reach-in freezers and refrigerators, amongst other HVAC equipment Maintains proficiency in Building Automated Systems and control circuits Ensures needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.
