This position is located within the Air Condition Unit, Engineering Section of the Facility Management Service. The incumbent in this position installs, troubleshoots, performs preventive maintenance, and repairs on all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration) equipment and controls at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan at a journeyman level.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. You must possess a valid EPA Technician Certification (Types I, II and III or Universal Certification) through an EPA approved technician program in order to meet the requirements of this position. This position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facility Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.Your duties can include but are not limited to the following: Repairing, troubleshooting, maintaining and installing air conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings; Installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining refrigerators, freezers and ice machines, including those utilized for patient food and drugs, laboratory specimens and blood products; Operating and repairing all aspects of the environmental control system to include adding and removing points in the system, building graphics, modifying and troubleshooting programing, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators and other control devices, and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and Troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions, such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification and air cleaning, filtering and circulating. Frequently works from ladders, platforms, high places and cramped spaces. Considerable climbing, walking and stooping is also required for this position. Frequently lifts and moves objects up to 50lbs., and occasionally lifts and carries objects over 50lbs. either alone or with others. Works indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions, and is exposed to the usual occupational hazards. Required to work in close, extremely hot or cold places and around high voltage electricity. Must work in noisy, dusty and humid places.
