Student Nurse Technicians (SNTs) function as a member of the nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in the care of patients receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance, and hospice care. The SNT works at the unit level and may function to support continuous observations, unit flow, and/or paired with an accountable Registered Nurse (RN) to support the bedside nurses with a variety of skills and patient care needs at all levels of care.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements at the time of application. Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. All Student Nurses must be a currently enrolled and accepted into the Nursing program at a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); Education: Completed one full academic year post high school and enrolled in an Associates of Nursing Degree, Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing degree, Master of Science in Nursing degree, or bridge program. Grade Determination: SNT-3 Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study, no clinical rotations required. SNT-4 Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study and completed clinical rotations. SNT-5 Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study and completed clinical rotations or completed a Bachelor's in a related field and entering into an entry-level Master's Nursing Program. NOTE: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until June 2, 2025. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be April 14, 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on as-needed basis until positions are filled. The Student Nurse Technician is a unique position that combines educational program training and clinical competence. They will be responsible for providing direct patient centered care in a variety of clinical settings (Extended Care & Rehab, Spinal Cord Injury, Primary Care, Specialty care, Procedural Areas, Intensive Care, and the Emergency Department). Duties include, but are not limited to: Measures and documents vital signs in all Electronic Health Record Systems Provides routine hygienic/activities of daily living care (ADLs) including: bathing, toileting, dressing, ambulation, feeding Supports respiratory cares: incentive spirometry; applies oxygen (cannula/oximizer/mask) under direction of RN Performs actions targeted to the maintenance/restoration of skin integrity Transports non-monitored patients Applies and provides routine care for condom catheter Provides routine hygienic care for patients with indwelling catheters and urinary drainage devices Obtains point of care testing, including urine, stool and sputum specimens, and blood glucose Monitors tracheotomy secretions and removes external secretions Performs oral suctioning with Yankeur suction device Hourly rounding Removes peripheral IV catheters Administers enteral feedings and checks for residual Feeds patient on aspiration precautions Preforms dressing changes/wound/ostomy cares Performs colostomy/urostomy pouch change Demonstrates proper 12 Lead ECG procedure VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards Paid Time Off: 50 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory Work Schedule: Day / Evening / Night - 8 hours tours- Intermittent: Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty.
