This position is part of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI), Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). As a Supervisory Security Guard you will be responsible for managing and administering the Security and Safety Programs for SIPI.
Individual Occupational Requirements: Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below and can be found here: OPM Operating Manual, General Qualification Standards for Security Guard Series, GS-0085. Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications requirements below. Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. GS-9 Grade Level: 1 year of specialized experience related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved managing and administering security and safety programs involving the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques and progressive responsibility for training subordinate or new security staff. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. Only experience obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year (52 weeks) of service at the next lower grade level.
As a Supervisory Security Guard, GS-0085-9, your typical work assignments will include the following: Manage and administer the Security and Safety Programs for the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. Provide first line supervision to security guards including setting priorities, assigning tasks and responsibilities, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and developing employee capabilities and approving leave. Patrol and monitor federal buildings and grounds to safeguard students, employees and visitors from harm, damage or danger and protect campus property and equipment against sabotage, theft, damage, vandalism, trespassing and disturbances. Serve as the primary Security Office contact providing assistance to the general public, employees, students, local law enforcement agencies and emergency response personnel. Responsible for ensuring all required training and certifications for the Security and Safety Programs is maintained within established guidelines. Minimize adverse effects on the safety and occupational health of employees by identifying and eliminating unsafe and unhealthful conditions. Advise management in the development and implementation of an effective safety and occupational health program including emergency preparedness plans.
