Job Description:

Serves as a journeyman pipefitter in the Facilities Management Service Pipefitting/Plumbing shop at the VA Healthcare system, in Bay Pines. A large complex medical center providing care to more than 90 thousand Veterans in seven counties; the main campus at Bay Pines consists of multiple buildings spread across hundreds of acres and relies on complex utility systems to maintain operations.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/23/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Frequently works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and in hard to reach areas. Work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment up to 50 lbs. with occasional lifting and carrying over 50 lbs. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside and may require working in bad weather, or in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. Work is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Employee is frequently exposed to the possibility of burns, uncomfortable heat conditions, cuts, scrapes, strains, bruises and broken bones.
Duties include, but are not limited to: Installs, maintain, and perform corrective actions on plumbing systems. Performs the duties of a journeyman plumber/pipefitter to install or modify equipment such as sewage, water, oil air or gas distribution systems, as well as bathroom and kitchen fixtures. Works on high- and low-pressure piping systems, steam generating and heating equipment, condensate, vacuum circulating pumps steam radiators, and other associated systems and equipment. Makes necessary installs, places and tests equipment, and make necessary adjustments to ensure function and operation Operates tools of the trade and be responsible for cleaning and maintaining them. Using tools of the trade such as hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, measuring tapes, pipe wrenches, levels, press joint systems, grooved pipe systems, soldering and brazing. Reviews specifications, work from blueprints and sketches, plan and routes the new systems and make necessary installations. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, Day Shift Schedule, time varies based on needs of the service.
