Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to Supervise (Screen-Out Element): I instruct other workers on less complex work methods, refer to manuals as a means in answering questions related to the proper identification and examination of materials; adhere to all safety standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The employee frequently lifts, holds, and carries moderately heavy objects, such as cables, chains, and shackles. Work involves constant reaching, bending, turning, and movement of hands, feet and arms. The work requires climbing on and off of vehicles. Vehicle operations result in frequent jerks and jolts which expose employees to bruises, cuts and strains. Employee must frequently lift cartons/equipment weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Heavier loads will require assistance. Work requires frequent physical exertion when installing weight handling gear. For example, the employee will have to lift and carry rigging gear and be required to bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, and climb. Work involves some standing or walking for prolonged periods of time. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is primarily performed in a physical distribution depot environment. Most rigging work will be performed outdoors. Other work may be performed in enclosed warehouses/buildings or outdoor staging/storage areas. The employee is exposed to prevailing weather conditions and air temperatures may vary from 20 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Assignments may be performed in work areas that are noisy with heavy mobile equipment (crane) and MHE traffic. Rigging assignments involve exposure to serious injuries resulting from swinging loads, falling objects, and broken cables/slings. The employee is also subject to cuts, bruises, burns, back strains, broken bones, and other injuries. Work is typically performed in industrial areas of a supply depot/center. Safety and Health Requirements: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection and protective clothing such as gloves, apron, and overalls. Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. If employee works near or around noise hazardous areas, mechanic, or equipment, the employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary.
Serves as a supervisor over materials handling and packing functions at DLA Distribution Albany, GA.
Supervises functions receiving, processing, stows, picks, manifesting, identifying, physical movement, unpacking and repacking of the material for storage.
Supervises functions such as issue using mechanized, automated, and manual material moving equipment, devices, and systems.
Establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods, and policies set by higher level supervisors.
Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific projects. Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work.
Informs higher level supervisors of the need to revise work schedules and re-estimates labor and other resources.
Participates with superiors in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, estimates, scheduling projected work.
Determines the type, size, and positioning of rigging gear needed to support material being hoisted. Estimates cubic weights of cargo to be hoisted and its center of gravity.
Secures a variety of heavy material, pre-blocked flat racks and trucks prior to loading, clamps or straps loaded material, cuts blocks, wedges, and parts for wooded bracing, and builds temporary decking, bulkheads, and cribbing around items.
Plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply shipping and storage containers and similar items.
