Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Facilities and Asset Management (OFAM), located in El Centro, CA.
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element(s): Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. To meet the Screen Out Element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties: Performing building maintenance, construction, and repair utilizing knowledge and application of trades such as electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, pipefitting, air-conditioning and refrigeration; Ensuring continual, safe, and proper operation of all building systems to include, but not limited to the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities. Interpreting blueprints, electrical schematics, drawings and specifications, and other technical guides; Working with test instruments, measuring devices, and hand and power tools; and Operating various pieces of weight handling equipment to move materials and equipment. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Knowledge of how to install and operate a wide range of complete electrical systems. Skill in the use of hand tools and power tools. Knowledge sufficient to repair and troubleshoot large, difficult AC systems. Skill in the use of accepted plumbing trade methods and techniques. Knowledge and ability in performing carpentry work on difficult or heavy items. NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 04/23/2025. Joining Customs & Border Protection (CBP), Office of Facilities and Asset Management, you will assist the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor and Portfolio Manager who are responsible for the administration and coordination of all matters pertaining to engineering and facilities at the Sector Headquarters complex, Border Patrol stations, Air and Marine facilities, various traffic check points, Air Operations hangars, and Anti-Smuggling Unit offices along the border. This position starts at an hourly rate of $33.75 (WL-10, Step 1) to $39.37 (WL-10, Step 5). Typical work assignments may include: Providing the continual, safe, and proper operation and preservation of buildings, grounds, structures, fixtures, equipment and utilities of Sector Headquarters, Border Patrol Stations, Air and Marine Facilities and traffic check points; Preparing on-site installation and repairs by examining building layout, anticipating difficulties, gathering materials and coordinating on-site work; Performing complex, difficult AC work on facilities which often have special requirements and which require seasoned judgment on complex repairs; and Providing input and feedback from facility repair activities to the Portfolio Manager, including the necessary reports, specifications, and documents.
