THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC (T32), Position Description Number D1562P01 and is part of the AL 280th CBCS, National Guard. ORGANIZATION: 280 SOK, DOTHAN, AL SELECTING OFFICIAL: MAJ B. WILLIAMS
MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military grade in the Alabama Air National Guard. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates the candidate's ability to maintain and repair automotive vehicles. Must have knowledge of where and how components, accessories, and parts of systems, such as wheel cylinders, fuel lines, condensers, etc. are installed. Must have the ability to use test equipment, reference material and manuals, and maintain tools and equipment SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience or training performing a variety of complex automotive maintenance procedures without assistance. Experience which demonstrates knowledge and use of a wide variety of test and measuring instruments in identifying the need for repair and adjustment or in checking the tolerance and fit specifications of repaired components and assemblies. SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE: -- Knowledge of the makeup, operation, and installation of major components and assemblies such as engines, power transmissions, suspensions, steering systems, braking systems, and related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, and wheel assemblies in vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (gasoline or multi-fuel). -- Knowledge of the M-series of tactical vehicles, to include blue fleet, GSA vehicles, dolly sets, and trailers --Skill in troubleshooting hard-to-find vehicle defects or problems and determining repairs needed. -- Knowledge sufficient to troubleshoot, repair, install or rebuild complex major systems and assemblies. Skill in use of related special power tools, hand tools and a wide variety of test equipment (e.g. test stands, oscilloscopes, compression gauges, engine and chassis dynamometers etc., common to the trade). -- Skill, knowledge, and ability to troubleshoot problems with major components and assemblies and determine how far major components should be torn down, what parts and mechanisms can be reworked and refitted or should be replaced with new parts, the type and extent of adjustments and alignments required, and the skill and knowledge to overhaul, repair, align, adjust, and perform operational checks on such components and assemblies. -- Ability to interpret and apply manufacturers' repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, engineering drawings, diagnostic codes, computer printouts, and other instructions, work orders, and established standards.
1. Inspects general condition of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles to determine overall vehicle condition, cause of malfunction or need for repair. Diagnoses malfunctions by visual or auditory examination methods. Uses complex test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges to determine exact nature or extent of repairs or adjustments necessary. Isolates malfunction cause using systematic vehicle analysis. Troubleshoots, inspects, tests and analyzes vehicle computer/electrical control systems, mechanical and hydraulic systems, lubricating, cooling, air conditioning and exhaust systems, engine electrical systems, engine fuel-air systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic transmission and differentials, power dividers, power trains, brakes, steering and suspension systems. Operates general and special purpose vehicles, base maintenance and materials handling equipment, as required to support the unit mission. 2. Performs required repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles as assigned, using independent judgment and own initiative on the repair work. Performs Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs) including scheduled and special inspections. Determines when and how far major components should be torn down; what parts and mechanisms can be reworked, refitted, or replaced with new parts and the type, extent and alignment required, using technical orders, commercial manuals or local directives. Removes, rebuilds, repairs, replaces vehicle system components. Adjusts and overhauls engine mechanical systems, state of the art systems, electrical, air conditioning, fuel-air, emission control, power trains, gear reduction systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic transmissions, differentials, power dividers and brakes, steering and suspension system components. Performs operational driving tests to determine serviceability. 3. Performs body repair and corrosion control; repaints and refinishes surfaces as required. Repairs and/or replaces body parts, locks, glass, etc., and determines if additional repairs are required. Uses welding equipment, power tools, hand tools and other specialized equipment. Cleans, tests and repairs radiators/oil coolers and associated parts. Incumbent replaces or repairs tires and tubes and balances wheels. 4. Prepares, maintains and submits maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection accounting. Records work performed or delayed and parts or maintenance required. Assists in review and maintenance of technical orders, operating instructions, commercial publications, Major Command (MAJCOM) and local publications, as well as other pertinent directives. Assists in establishing and maintaining adequate bench and special stock support levels and appropriate tools and equipment. Uses and maintains shop equipment. Researches or assists in requisitioning materials, parts and equipment necessary to perform the vehicle maintenance/management mission. 5. Participates as On-the-Job Training (OJT) instructor in the vehicle maintenance area. Conducts instructional classes on methods and procedures of operation and maintenance concerning all aspects of vehicles and assigned shop maintenance support equipment. Evaluates effectiveness of instruction, maintains individual and section training and qualification records in the Air Force automated information system (AIS) of record. Plans and schedules tasks and training activities for drill status guard members. Trains assigned drill status guardsmen on the maintenance, repair, and modification of various types of motor vehicles, both gasoline and diesel powered. Develops, establishes and maintains work center training programs to train drill status guard members in mission critical tasks. Conducts unit wide training in environmental issues including Hazardous Communication (HAZCOM), Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) and other environmental related areas. Carries out various duties in support of mobilization readiness of section assigned personnel and equipment. Assists in conducting the local occupational safety and health training program, to include compliance with directives and procedures for proper disposal of hazardous waste products. Performs other duties as assigned.
