To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical Requirements: In Accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 10 lbs., sitting (4 hours), standing (2 hours), walking (2 hours), bending/stooping (1 hour), twisting (1/2 hour), simple grasping (4 hours), fine manipulation (6 hours), reaching above the shoulder (1/2 hour), and operating machinery (1/2 hour).
The Incumbent is responsible for providing the full ranging of psychiatric services (assessment, consultation, medication management) in the inpatient and outpatient settings. The position is located at John Cochran VA in St. Louis City Functions: Clinical Responsibilities: 97.5 % time Provide a full range of clinical services within their assigned team. Has direct responsibility for all aspects of mental health services offered under his/her supervision, including those conducted by trainees and staff Consults with and serves as a resource for other professional personnel concerning the need for and development of mental health services. Academic/Teaching/Training: 0% time (Possible activities which may include, but not limited to): Academic appointment with an affiliated university of the VA St. Louis Health Care System. Provide leadership, guidance, and consultation on staff education and development. Other Significant Responsibilities: 2.5% time Has contact on a regular and recurring basis with individuals representing widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view. Serve on Medical Center, VISN and National VA committees, such as the, the Quality Executive Board, the Leadership Performance Advisory Board, the VISN MH Clinical Practice Council, and various other VISN and national committees and workgroups. Represent the Medical Center at professional community group/events and committees, in conferences/meetings with higher ranking managers, supervisors, and staff from other disciplines or work units, and/or with representatives of local public interest groups, congressional district offices and employees of State and local governments. Age, Development, & Cultural Needs of Patients The primary age of patients treated and cared for are typically between the ages of 18-60 years of age though a significant percentage may be older than 60. The position requires the incumbent to possess or develop an understanding of the particular needs of these types of patients.
