The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic will function under the Facilities Maintenance Service.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/05/2025. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The physical effort required of the incumbent usually involves the frequent lifting and moving of parts weighing 50 lbs. or more. Because the systems are usually larger, they must be maneuvered into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling is correctly completed. Hoists, ladders and pulleys are used when removing large compressors, condensers, and chillers. The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently done for long periods of time.
The major duties for this position are as follow: The incumbent performs all necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on all HV AC and refrigeration equipment within the Medical Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and other duties as assigned. The incumbent works independently under the supervision of the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor on assignments that include larger projects with more complex problems and with more technical repairs requiring excellent judgment. Maintains equipment serviceability, structural integrity, and provide the maximum aesthetic environment throughout the Medical Center's facilities serving our patients The incumbent is responsible for assuring that work meets building code requirements applicable to the facility. Adjusts manual and automatic controls. Operates, and maintains the computer based Building Management System (BMS) system. Works with voltage from 24V AC and DC to 480V AC and with 1-phase and 3-phase and installs and services electric motors from 1/6 HP to 100 HP. Performs installations, modifications, disassembly, reassembly, and repair Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
