This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, USCG, Yard, Industrial Department, Structural Group in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. To meet the screen-out examples of the duties includes: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervison. (SCREENOUT) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair, etc. Knowledge of materials Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of measuring instruments National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
You will assist journeymen Boat Joiners and Sheetmetal Mechanics with work that cannot be handled alone and also performs less difficult tasks alone. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: * Using power and hand tools common to the trades for working on less difficult tasks such as preparing and finishing surfaces by grinding, sealing and sanding decks, and deck coverings; repairing, installing various types of terrazzo, epoxy, etc. * Installing and removing protecting coverings where needed; installing sheathing; assisting in the fabrication and installation of sheetmetal components. * Assisting in drydocking operations.
