The position is located in the Environmental Management Service of a VA Medical Center. The position performs both supervisory and non-supervisory janitorial and custodial services for the unit. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
Duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent is delegated responsibility for assigning staff for routine and non-routine duties on a daily and a project-by-project basis. Supervises 10-20 Housekeeping Aids and 1-2 WL Leaders. Non-routine duties require that the incumbent be able to reorganize work schedules efficiently in order that work is accomplished in a timely manner. Required to coordinate work with supervisors of other services within the incumbent's area of jurisdiction so as not to interrupt patient care or other activities. Responsible for the cleaning of all patient areas, corridor spaces throughout Medical Center, Operating Rooms, and all other areas as assigned. Responsible for assuring the efficient and economical accomplishment of work assignments of subordinates within established policies and schedules set by higher levels of supervision. Plans daily and weekly assignments, scheduling periodic work for areas of responsibility, taking into consideration the availability of personnel and equipment to meet established priorities. Trains staff and ensure that they are using the patient centered care principles in terms of their customer service to patients, patients' family members and personnel. Provides on-the job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate. Due to the constant change in the type of patients, proper on-the-job training is necessary to ensure the housekeeping duties are effectively accomplished. Incumbent must give special direction to new employees in order to prepare them for individual assignments, procedures and safety policies. Incumbent must schedule regular meetings with staff to make them aware of any new procedures or directives. Incumbent must keep their supervisor informed as to the condition of staff, unusual occurrences or matters that should be brought to the attention of their supervisor. Must keep subordinates abreast of proper methods, procedures and uses of equipment and supplies; control the use of supplies and equipment to affect cost control within the unit. Incumbent may be assigned to conduct in-use testing of equipment and/or supplies, providing feedback in regards to their observations. Incumbent ensures all safety regulations and procedures are observed; may on occasion be required to conduct training classes on specific safety issues. Routinely inspect assigned areas to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, sanitation levels are maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner. Responsible for the quality inspection of assigned areas, recording discrepancies in cleanliness, needed maintenance repairs, broken or inadequately stored furnishings and equipment. Provides documented HR Actions, inspection reports and takes action on unaccomplished work. Incumbent is responsible for the review of procedures, methods and sequence of tasks performed by employees under their supervision. Other duties as assigned.
