This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, Industrial Department in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) 6. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You will be responsible for assisting the Yard's Dockmaster. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable member of the team. Typical duties includes: * Working and leading a team during drydocking operations using the transit to sight reference points and directing the activities of others by keeping riggers and other rope handlers informed of ship's alignment as it settles over the blocks. * Standing the drydock security watch on the second and third shifts and on Saturdays and Sundays, when a vessel is on either or both drydocks. * Measuring and logging the freeboard on each dock three times during each watch; inspecting all compartments on the #2 dock three times during each watch to ensure that no ruptures exist which would damage the dock machinery. * Setting up and operating woodworking shop machinery such as circular saws, jigsaws, planers, joiners, and portable power tools, as well as a wide variety of hand tools to erect, maintain and remove shoring and staging together with related liferails, platforms and accesses. * Positioning blocks and other structures in relationship to the center line and frame lines and builds up heights according to the plan of the ship so the ship's weight will be evenly supported at many points. * Performing related duties in marine railway operations. Installing wooden plugs in hull fittings of dry docked vessels and installing protective covers over transducers and sea chests. * Measuring longitudinal and vertical distances on drydocks and vessels.
