The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician works to support the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) and is part of the management team. This is an above full performance level position as a supervisor responsible for the oversight of SPS staff in the Sterile Processing Service. In this position, the incumbent monitors staff to ensure the proper methods and processes occur.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English. Experience and/or Education. Experience. Six (6) months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work. OR Education. One (1) year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position. OR Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). GRADE DETERMINATION - GS-08 Experience. One (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-08. Physical Requirements: Work requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. It may require some lifting and/or carrying heavy items during the course of the work day. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting, the SPS work area or other clinical settings. Incumbent is required to wear protective clothing and be subjected to loud noises from machinery and offensive smells. Incumbent must exercise various safety precautions, protective measures/ devices, etc., eg wearing protective gown, mask, and or gloves. Incumbent must carefully monitor the work area to minimize potential exposure to hydrogen peroxide and other hazardous materials, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, VA and local polices and regulations.
Duties include but are not limited to the following: Will coordinate all operations, priorities, and reprocessing procedures daily within the Decontamination, High level disinfection, Preparation, Sterilization, and storage areas for semi-critical and critical RME. The employee will work as a team member with other Medical Supply Technicians of various experience levels to carry out the daily work utilizing the written standard operating procedures in accordance with manufactured s instructions, policies, and governing guidelines and directives. Strict support/adherence to all Federal and local policies and procedures must be maintained. Incumbent will ensure work is distributed in the most fair and equitable manner and will seek assistance when any actions are unclear. Supervisor is expected to exhibit professional behavior in all actions and communications. Incumbent will adjust staff assignments as needed to complete these expectations. It is expected that this position will recommend or perform staffing, shift changes, time and leave duties, and will evaluate employee performance and behavior. When deficiency is observed, he/she will initiate the conversation with the Assistant Chief or Chief SPS. In collaboration with the SPS Educator and RME Coordinator, incumbent is responsibility for evaluating learning needs, assisting in the scheduling of orientation, on the job training, identification of in-service education topics and maintenance of various programs within the SPS. Learning needs he/she identifies will be communicated routinely to the SPS Educator and RME Coordinator. Knowledge and application of the 1116(2) VHA SPS Directive, Infection Control Procedures, Joint Commission and other governing body guidelines and regulations. Supervisor will have communication with clinical services and operating rooms to facilitate operations and department efficiency. He/she will resolve informal customer complaints and follow up as necessary. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 3:30PM - 12:00AM Telework: Not Authorized. Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
