This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, YARD, Industrial Department, Electro Group, in Baltimore, MD.
Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired. Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: 1) Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision 2) Knowledge of equipment, assembly, installation, repair, etc. 3) Use of test equipment (electronics) 4) Theory of electronics 5) Ability to use hand and power tools - electronics 6) Troubleshooting (electronic equipment) 7) Ingenuity (ability to suggest and apply new methods) National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
You will serve as lead mechanic on a wide variety and types of marine craft, the maintenance and repair of highly complex complete operational control systems.Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include: Working in teams to install and put into operation major electronic and electrical control systems that are new to the fleet or that will have major modifications of existing systems, especially when there is little knowledge of the system problem areas and expertise in its repair. Troubleshooting and repairing new systems during the operational test and improvise procedures to cope with unforeseen defects, as well as submitting changes to existing schematics to reflect said improvisions. Typical projects include Coast Guard vessels: advanced Programmable Logic Controllers installs and upgrades (including PLC software); installing/testing/testing/calibrating/aligning propulsion systems (diesel, diesel electric DC, turbo, and turbine) electronic governor controls and systems. Completing finish projects utilizing the following: blueprints, schematics, drawings, sketches, manufacturer's instructions, specifications, technical manuals, verbal instructions, and vast experience.
