Applicants must have had sufficient training and experience to show their ability to perform the duties of the position. To qualify for this position, you MUST meet the Barely Acceptable level on both screen-out elements (Ability to supervise) and (Aptitude for work with prisoners); receive at least one half of the total possible points; AND you must furnish detailed information on your resume to support your assessment responses to demonstrate that you clearly possess the experience and skills to successfully perform the duties of this position at the journeyman level. The incumbent is responsible for the supervision and instruction of inmate workers in the construction, alteration, repair and modification of structures such as framework, rafters, doors, paneling, windows, interior and exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams. Incumbent is responsible for the training, custody and discipline of inmate workers assigned to the carpentry shop. The incumbent is familiar with the Bureau of Prisons’ policies regarding care and treatment of inmates and stays aware of any special problems concerning inmates under his supervision. He/she observes and consults with inmates, particularly with reference to assisting inmates with adjustment problems. He prepares inmate progress reports. The Carpenter Supervisor provides guidance, explanation and interpretations of rules and regulations. The incumbent is responsible for adhering to safety procedures for hazardous material handling, OSHA requirements, and environmental issues. He/she ensures inmates comply with Institution and OSHA Safety Regulations through example and lectures. The incumbent will be responsible for the ordering and purchasing of all material/equipment needed to perform assigned projects. The majority of the purchases will be done with the use of a government credit card. The incumbent will be required to reconcile credit card statements each month. The incumbent will be knowledgeable in the Facilities Department database Computerized Maintenance and Management Software (CMMS) and be able to input and retrieve pertinent maintenance data. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
