Job Description:
The Electrician position is located within the Engineering Service, Facilities Management at the Salisbury VA Medical Center, in Salisbury, North Carolina. The incumbent is responsible for installing, modifying, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and testing, new and existing electrical wires, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Major duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls; Interprets basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical/system diagrams and schematics; Applies a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground and install wiring and equipment for electrical/electronic systems; Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices; Inspects electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers; Identifies electrical problems using a variety of testing devices; Interprets and applies state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code; Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD# 01447A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Physical Effort: Must work from ladders in high places, in manholes, and is on feet most of the time. Lifts, carries, pulls, steadies, or otherwise moves electrical parts and materials, chain falls or tools weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Installing, adjustments, repairs, or replacement of arts or assemblies may require kneeling, stooping, climbing ladders, reaching over, under, and into equipment while in cramped or awkward position. Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work inside and outside, in all types of weather and conditions to maintain and repair the electrical systems, its components, and all allied electrical equipment. Frequently exposed to abrasions, cuts, burns, or shock , moving parts and equipment, high voltage components, or machinery while working. May be exposed to the possibility of serious injury from slips and falls. Frequently works in cramped spaces and around hot, oily, noisy, dirty and dusty areas. Should work be assigned which requires the use of respirator, the incumbent of this position will be required to wear a respirator and be respirator qualified. Conditions of Employment: Emergency overtime may be required. The incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, but are normally expected to work an administrative work week schedule.
