The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic assists journeyman level air conditioning mechanics and air conditioning operators in the daily operation, maintenance, repair and preventive maintenance of a large variety of HVAC and refrigeration equipment and systems. Duties include work that is performed to repair and modify a variety of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions or work concerned primarily with operating air conditioning systems for large buildings/complexes.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic must possess and maintain a current Type I and Type II Certification in Refrigerant Usage and Recovery. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Technical Practices Troubleshooting (Electrical) Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The AC Equipment Mechanic's duties will include, but are not limited to the following: Assist journeyman air conditioning mechanics working on a variety of separate small air conditioning units and pieces of equipment, or on a large central systems when major repairs are not involved. Installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, and making repairs on a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems such walk-in and reach-in coolers, refrigerators, etc. Make simple repairs to a variety of components on large central systems when major repairs are not required. Perform preventive maintenance inspections to assure proper temperature of conditioned spaces, proper operation of all parts of the refrigeration cycle, proper oil levels and to detect unusual noises, overheating of components, loose connections, all frayed or loose and defective components. Replacing items such as belts, fuses and gaskets. Ability to prepare duct work diagrams in planning and laying out work. Plan and lay out the work to be performed on a particular task such as ordering of material to construct and install duck work in a critical care area. Comprehensive trade knowledge of electrical theory (A.C. and D.C.), principles, elements, and systems operations. Ability to use practical knowledge in the maintenance computerized systems such as fire alarm duct detectors, refrigeration alarms, and HVAC ( heating, ventilation, air conditioning). The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic must possess and maintain a current Type I and Type II Certification in Refrigerant Usage and Recovery. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Position Description Title/PD#: Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic/PD70140A Physical Requirements: Handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices rarely weighing over 50 pounds. May use platforms or scaffolding equipment to repair hard to reach parts. Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to heat, restricted ventilation and poor illumination in areas such as equipment rooms. Incumbent is exposed to all weather conditions when working outside (Parking Areas, roof, etc.). Incumbent is exposed to various hazardous materials in the course of performing work assignments. They are provided protective clothing, equipment, and safety devices for personal protection. The equipment rooms are above the allowable decibel rating and hearing protection is provided. Hazardous gases are in the work environment during various tasks. Respiratory protection is provided for the incumbent.
