Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Operations Support, Office of the Chief Medical Officer, located in Washington, DC and South Portland, ME.
This position has an Individual Occupational Requirement. You qualify for this position if you meet the basic requirement and possess the experience as described below: Basic Requirements - Education: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. AND Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Monitoring, analyzing, and responding to public health concerns; Collaborating with field personnel, medical providers, interagency, and public health partners to standardize data collection methods, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of health reporting, and/or establish protocols for analyzing and interpreting health trends; Conducting data analysis and providing evidence-based recommendations to support leadership in making informed decisions regarding health risks; Leading efforts to enhance heath surveillance, data collection, and early warning systems for communicable diseases and other public health threats NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 05/23/2025. This position starts at a salary of $105,383.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $137,000.00 (GS-13, Step 10). Salary: Salary listed reflects the rest of U.S. scale and, if applicable, will be adjusted to meet the locality pay or cost of living expenses of the duty location upon selection. While serving as an Epidemiologist, you duties will include: Serving as an expert in the field of public health, providing evidence-based expertise and consultation to CBP leadership, operators, and stakeholders on issues related to the health and well-being of individuals in CBP custody. Conducting public health surveillance, assessing infectious disease risks, evaluating environmental health conditions, and recommending appropriate interventions to mitigate health threats. Evaluating communicable disease risks in CBP facilities, conducting research on disease transmission patterns, and analyzing epidemiological data to inform health interventions. Monitoring global and domestic health trends, assessing the potential impact of emerging infectious diseases on CBP operations, and developing strategies to strengthen CBP's ability to detect, track, and respond to public health threats in a timely and effective manner. Facilitating data sharing, joint risk assessments, and coordinating response efforts, ensuring that CBP remains aligned with best practices in public health monitoring and disease prevention.
