Job Description:

This position is located in the Warehouse area of the Logistics Service in a Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHCS) and supported catchment area. The position is located at an assigned Veterans Administration medical facility performing warehouse work. The position serves as a lead over a group of Materials Handlers within a warehouse setting.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work involves considerable walking, pushing, and pulling a variety of carts and materials handling equipment. Works offloading and loading trucks, lifting products on and off-shelves, handling boxes frequently weighing over 40 pounds. Will frequently handle equipment, furniture, and materials of an awkward and heavier nature in excess of 100 pounds. These items are typically handled using specialized equipment and/or assistance of coworkers. Greater physical effort may be required on projects involving the movement of large quantities of product over an extended period of time including, but not limited to, turn-ins, large shipments and deliveries. While operating vehicles, may be required to exert a greater level of physical exertion while backing and turning trucks, operating forklifts, or hand trucks on uneven terrains and uncertain conditions. Working Conditions Required to work in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouses that may be hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. Will be required to work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all types of weather conditions during all seasons. Hazardous materials may be encounter in daily work activities. Duties subject to the possibility of trips, falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, or injury from the use of equipment. All types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required. Subject to conditions that could result in serious accidents; precautions will be taken. Must possess a valid, state driver's license.
Work Leader Responsibilities Leads crew of Materials Handlers as a regular and recurring part of the job in order to accomplish assigned projects and daily operational functions. Assures all safety and housekeeping procedures are followed. Ensures workers are aware of trade techniques and practices, and explains safety precautions to be followed while setting up machinery and equipment and operating related vehicles. Reports to supervisor on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays. Answers questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems. Ensures workers are briefed on instructions received from supervisors, and getting work started, by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the crew. Works along with other workers and sets the pace. Demonstrates proper work method. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work. Serves as the subject matter expert on relevant regulatory requirements for all aspects of warehouse management including, but not limited to, VHA Directives, Local Medical Center Memorandums (MCM), Standard Operating Procedures, and other written guidelines; shares knowledge with Materials Handlers. Non-Lead Duties: Assists in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock in accordance with VA regulations and requirements that determine the configuration setup, movement, rearrangement and traffic flow. May coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments and placement of materials on the docking area which may require scheduling personnel to facilitate movement of materials in accordance with priorities, scheduling requirements and space allocations. Maintains spreadsheets; works within responsible area to rotate stock, check for outdates, and maintain the appropriate safeguards and temperature controls. Works with the Warehouse supervisor and the Property Manager(s) [Inventory Management Specialist(s) (NX)] to ensure the appropriate disposition of equipment. Works with the Inventory Manager(s) [Inventory Management Specialist(s) (EX)] to ensure timely stocking of Primaries, participating in a variety of inventories and communicating discrepancies as appropriate. Handles direct issue products and ensures they are processed out in a timely fashion, with special attention given to time sensitive and emergency requests; any failed delivery or product not delivered timely should have corresponding documentation, signatures may be required per request of cardholder or current procedures. Safely receives, stores and moves hazardous or toxic materials and substances such as certain types of chemicals or radioactive materials in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements. Serves as a senior member of a warehouse project team of materials handlers involved in special projects, such as conversion of the warehouse from a manual to an automated system, relocating a major commodity or equipment group, or setting up a new commodity group area. Performs other duties as assigned.
