This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Failure to Obtain License or Certification. In all cases, social workers must actively pursue meeting state prerequisites for licensure or certification starting from the date of their appointment. Failure to become licensed or certified within the prescribed amount of time will result in removal from the GS-0185 social worker series and may result in termination of employment. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques. (d) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. Duties below are for full performance level GS-11, GS-9 will differ in complexity and oversight. Provides intensive case management and mental health services that include biopsychosocial assessments and development of measurable and goal-oriented treatment plans Provides individual, group, and family counseling and social work interventions to assist Veterans with housing and employment stability and community reintegration. Provides evidence-based practice treatment to Veterans consistent with Housing First and Critical Time Intervention models, effectively using motivational interviewing techniques to help Veterans move forward on identified goals. Uses evidence-based practice techniques to engage Veterans in setting individualized treatment planning goals and will monitor progress over time. Assigned as a Mental Health Treatment Coordinator for assigned caseload and will provide expert case management services that help Veterans maximize health and function. Expert on VA and community resources associated with homelessness, mental health treatment, and substance use disorder treatment. Uses knowledge of medical and mental health diagnosis, disabilities, and treatment procedures. Establishes and maintains effective professional working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds. Works with vulnerable Veterans with underlying chronic medical or mental health conditions that will substantially impact Veteran's life expectancy and or ability to function that cannot be effectively cared for due to homelessness. Provides outreach to Veterans to assist with housing searches and housing retention. Ensures that HUD-VASH resources are targeted to chronically homeless and other priority Veterans with highest vulnerability. Works closely with the HUD-VASH Supervisor, community partners, VA National call center, Veterans, other VA Homeless Programs, VA and community medical facilities, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, Community Resource and Referral Centers, and Vet Centers. Completes comprehensive assessments and collaborative safety plans when clinically indicated, providing follow-up contacts or appointments for Veterans. Completes suicide risk screens for suicidality and/or other high-risk behaviors; facilitating admission to mental health inpatient programs as needed. Provides follow up to Veterans who fail to attend appointments, per local procedures, and consults with Suicide Prevention Coordinator and consults with direct supervisor as needed to ensure the safety and welfare of all Veterans. Provide health promotion education including Advanced Directives, Living Wills, and other education that supports Veteran's medical care. Uses the VA Homeless Operations Management and Evaluation System (HOMES) database to document and reconcile housing status, case management stages, and employment status among other items.
