Job Description:

The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant works for the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). The Supervisory MSA Is responsible for managing the Lead and Advanced Medical Support Assistants (MSA's) in the Emergency Department.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Grade Determinations: 1 year of experience at equivalent to the next lower level of GS-07. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. It occasionally requires carrying of light objects such as files, books and papers; some walking, standing, and bending. No special physical qualifications are required.
Major duties include, but are not limited to: Implementing and enforcing administrative policies and procedures for the Emergency Department. Ensures subordinate Advanced MSAs appropriately check-in, register new patients, and capture insurance data within VA guidelines. Ensures ED has the appropriate equipment, supplies and space to safely accomplish work. Prepares and presents reports for leadership, including daily reports as required. Exercises human resources responsibility by initiating requests for recruitment, interviewing, and selecting employees, complying with EEO objectives; planning and assigning work, and maintaining accurate and current position descriptions. Sets priorities and establishes schedules; evaluates performance, recommends promotions and awards; approves requests for leave; identifies training needs; keeps employees informed; provides counsel; and recommends disciplinary action as required. Keeps supervisor informed of the status of on-going personnel actions and provides advice on solving complex personnel­ related problems. Keeps employees/supervisors apprised of available incentive awards and other employee recognition opportunities, assisting in preparation/submission of necessary documentation.Coordinates performance appraisal rating activities, assuring compliance with labor contracts and VA regulations. Assures collection and aggregation of data related to competencies for annual reports. Ensures that performance ratings are submitted in a timely manner in accordance with regulatory guidelines. Takes a leadership role in maintaining all current documents necessary to meet requirements of accrediting bodies such as Joint Commission, etc. Ensures completion of all mandated training by service line staff. Performs program cost analyses, such as cost-benefit or economic evaluations of programs. Identifying educational or training need for ED AMSA. Disseminates new VA Directives and procedures that impact/relate to front desk and clinic operations and provides training to staff. Anticipates problems and develops systems and processes to ensure the goals and mission of the VA can be met.
