Job Description:

The purpose of the position is to supplement the permanent Park Ranger workforce by performing various "generalist' duties": facilitate visitor understanding of park resources, facilitate visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources, facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of park, encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/16/2025-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; deliver structured and informal presentations using various communication techniques to a variety of audiences; archeological or historical preservation research work involving presentations. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least have four (4) years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of coursework in a related field. Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, I have six (6) months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement) and 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of related coursework as specified (50% of the related coursework required). You must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies each course, the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit transcripts, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
MAJOR DUTIES: Backcountry Ranger: Perform foot or horse patrols of backcountry and front country trails and off-trail areas. The work includes hiking and/or riding over rough, steep, rocky, and often slippery surfaces both on and off trail at elevations above 2,000' above sea level. Canoe patrols are done on flat water sections of the river. Some patrols may include overnight stays in the backcountry. Perform trail maintenance, fence monitoring and repair, spring monitoring and maintenance, checking backcountry permits, educating visitors about park facilities and resources, and performing a variety of resource management and maintenance projects. Facilitate visitor understanding of park resources, visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources, visitor behavior consistent with resource protection, and visitor's sense of stewardship for the park. AREA: Theodore Roosevelt National Park is in the badlands of western North Dakota and includes the Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness Area. The park consists of three separate units: South Unit, Elkhorn Ranch Unit, and North Unit. The colorful Little Missouri River badlands provide a scenic backdrop to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is home to a variety of plants and abundant wildlife. The headquarters office for the park is in the South Unit in Medora, ND (population 100). This is a seasonal town with a variety of services available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Complete services and a university are in Dickinson (population 25,000), 35 miles to the east. The North Unit is located 16 miles south of Watford City, ND (population 2,500), and is 70 miles by road from park headquarters. Limited medical facilities and shopping are in Watford City. Complete services and a college are in Williston, 60 miles northwest, and complete services and a university are in Dickinson, 70 miles southeast.
