This position is located within Building Unit/Carpenter Shop of Engineering Service at the Veterans Healthcare System, Canandaigua, NY. The Maintenance Mechanic Worker will perform carpentry, painting, masonry, and furniture maintenance responsibilities.
SCREEN-OUT: Ability to perform the work as a Maintenance Mechanic Worker without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes using skills from a variety of trades such as carpentry, painting, and masonry that involves installation, maintenance, and repair of architectural of buildings; performing furniture maintenance; laying out, measuring and cutting materials; reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, instructions, and work orders; and using and maintaining tools and equipment common to these various trades. (Resume must clearly support responses to the online questionnaire to received credit) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires standing for extended periods of time, continual movement of hands and arms, reaching, stooping, and bending. Physical exertion is required when handling work materials which includes lifting items weighing up to 50 pounds and for heavy or bulky items uses lifting devices or with assistance from other workers. Position requires safely climbing ladders and scaffolding and works from those locations for up to two hours at a time. The position requires use of a variety of hand-held power tools, equipment, and supplies common to the trade. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and will be exposed to the elements. Work sites may be hot, dusty, humid, and lack adequate ventilation. Outdoor projects are performed is all types of weather from extreme cold and rain to high heat and humidity. Employee is subjected to cuts and bruises from unforeseen hazards associated with building repair and equipment, exposure to high noise levels, irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to fumes, solvents, or paints. Requires use of protective equipment such as fall protection, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, proper footwear, respirators, etc. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Carpenter: cuts, constructs, installs, and repairs a variety of wood and wood substitute structures, sheetrock, interior and exterior structures, metal working, etc.; applies standard measurements, shop mathematics, instructions, plans and blueprints to complete the project; uses hand or power tools on constructions and renovations. Furniture: assembles, disassembles, reconfigures, makes repairs, and lifts and moves/relocates heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies. May use pallet jacks, dollies, pickup or flatbed truck. Flooring: assists with installing flooring systems, including carpentry, vinyl composite tile, ceramic wall, and floor tile. Painting: assists with painting, touch ups, installation of signs/banners, hanging pictures, and assures journeyman painters are supplied with tools and materials. Masonry: assists with construction of repair of masonry walls, floors, walkways or driveway patches using cinderblock, brick, concrete or plaster and lath, includes mixing cement, mortar and adhesives. Applies working knowledge of building codes and systems (e.g., steam, water, sanitary, electrical, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, interior building components) and ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and specifications to complete the project. Occasionally operates a forklift, power pallet jack, or high reach work platform to deliver materials and tools where they are needed. Performs other duties as necessary.
