Job Description:

This position is located within the N92 division of Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department, Naval Air Station Key West, Florida. The purpose of this position is to manage the fitness/wellness programs for the Naval Air Station, Key West, and all tenant commands. The incumbent may also perform duties related to those of a fitness specialist and group fitness instructor.

Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Must have extensive experience in the field of physical education and knowledge of the principles as well as teachings in exercise physiology. Knowledge of the safe use and operation of fitness equipment, facility operations, and basic fitness equipment maintenance/repair. Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced program in the recreation specialty area which meets the needs of the participating community. Skill and ability to provide fitness training and programming to individuals and groups of various sizes. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook). Ability to competently and independently carry out fitness programs through the proper application of principles, concepts and techniques of fitness to satisfy specific needs of the community to be served. Ability to effectively lead and supervise a diverse team of individuals to provide exceptional customer service and accomplish the NAS Key West Fitness Program mission objectives Ability to conduct accurate fitness testing and provide recommended fitness program, based on fitness goals. Ability to prepare clear, concise, and technically sound reports related to work within the Branch. Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. Directly supervises fitness specialists, recreation assistants (fitness), and contract instructors. Provides leadership necessary to maintain an effective and productive work force. Ensures continuous flow and exchange of information between employees. Trains/leads other employees in various recreation/physical fitness-related positions. Meets regularly with Fitness Director to strategize how to implement fitness programs and services. Specific supervision responsibilities include but are not limited to: Approving leave Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates with selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignments and the capabilities of employees Evaluating performance of subordinates Monitoring workload Analyzing methods and results and instructions to individuals on both work and administrative matters Interview candidates and make selections of appointments, promotion or reassignment Hearing employee complaints; reviewing and recommending disciplinary actions Identifying and developing required training for employees Conducting regular facility equipment and inventory checks Maintains clean and safe facilities by ensuring cleaning duties are being performed, whether by staff, or contracted employees Assists Fitness Director with planning, development, administration, and coordination of all fitness programs for all eligible patrons covering all components of the Navy's Wellness, Health, and Physical Readiness Programs: Weight Control, Nutrition, Exercise, Smoking Cessation, Hypertension Control, Stress Management, Back Injury Prevention, Prevention of Substance Abuse Develops individual fitness/wellness programs unique to the individual needs of each patron Promotes and publicizes services available through a variety of sources Assists Fitness Specialist with supervising Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling Series (NOFFS), Mission Nutrition Command Fitness Leader Course and other CNIC Headquarters supported/endorsed programs Assists with marketing and promotion of fitness programs Personal Training and Group Exercise (includes but not limited to): Coordinates the design, supervision, coaching, and instruction of a variety of group exercise programs (e.g., Step, Spin, Water Aerobics) inside and outside of the various fitness facilities. Coordinates fitness training and programming to groups of various sizes. Coordinates certified personal training services to all eligible patrons. Coordinates Instruction of patrons in the proper use of all equipment for training and self -monitored progress by preparing written instructions and procedures for the performance of work, use of equipment, safety and well-being of all involved. Coordinates assisting patrons on the fitness floor by providing training tips in order to prevent unsafe or ineffective exercise techniques. Coordinates written instruction and procedures for performance of work, use of equipment, safety, and well-being of all involved. Coordinates the proper implementation and maintenance of conditioning and training programs for aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, body composition, and flexibility training. Coordinates administration of fitness testing, which includes measuring aerobic capacity, body composition, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance, and blood pressure. Incumbent stays current and ensures fitness specialists stay current with latest fitness programming ideas to increase attendance and improve customer satisfaction CFL/FEP Outreach (includes but not limited to): Coordinates with Fitness Specialist, CFL, ACFL's to provide certified personal training and group exercise services to active duty military as outlined in the Navy's Physical Readiness Program instruction. Coordinates the instruction of the Command Fitness Leader course and fitness related general military training. Oversees Fitness Specialist's role in working with various command representatives (CFL, ACFL) to develop and implement physical fitness programs for military personnel. General (includes but not limited to): Ensures fitness spaces and equipment are clean and maintained. Performs basic equipment maintenance and repair. Assists with inspecting facilities and equipment and corrects discrepancies: Notifies supervisor of any maintenance problems or deficiencies which require assistance from outside sources Selects and recommends procurement actions for required exercise equipment and supplies staying within the constraints of budgetary limitations.
