This position is located at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, MI, (585) and is organizationally aligned under the Engineering Service line. The primary purpose for this position is to perform pipefitter and plumber duties.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: Plans, layouts, and routes steam piping systems and associated components from building plans, blueprints, codes and regulations. Install, repair, test, and maintain specialty piping systems and equipment. Install and maintain pip insulation of fiberglass, molded magnesium, cork and rubber on steam piping systems. Inspects, adjusts, cleans, and repairs plumbing fixtures and systems, steam operated equipment, heating and water systems, waste lines, heat exchangers, convectors, water heaters, sterilizers, coils, and other similar equipment. Reads and interprets the International Plumbing Code, blueprints and manufacturers' specifications for installing and repairing equipment. Conducts safety and preventive maintenance inspections of utility systems and equipment in accordance with VA regulations and National Codes. Maintain a stock level of repair parts and supplies. Researching and ordering required equipment and parts. Interprets and applies building plans and blueprints to layout angles, arcs, and circles. Safely use hand tools, drills, motorized equipment, test equipment, temperature meters, pressure meters and gages along with other trade specific equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday with the specific shift to be discussed during interviews. Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD23449A Physical Requirements: Incumbent makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms to reach equipment in out of the way places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally lifts and carries items over 50 pounds. Work is inside and outside in hot, humid, or cold environments. It is usually dusty, dirty, and greasy. Bad smelling fumes are sometimes present. Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, frequently exposed to the possibility of sometimes severe strains, cuts, burns, noise, eye damage, bruises and infection and is, therefore, required to use appropriate procedures and equipment available for personal protection. The incumbent may be required to work with asbestos contaminated materials and will, therefore, be required to use protective clothing and equipment to eliminate possible asbestos exposure. Incumbent is furnished personal protection equipment are required to perform the duties of the position.
