The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a dedicated and experienced dentist to manage the Community Care dental program. This position offers a unique opportunity to strengthen dental care access for Veterans by building and refining external provider relationships that deliver timely, high-quality care when VA capacity is limited.
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. BASIC REQUIREMENTS United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed. (2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~ Residency: Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~ License: Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. English Language Proficiency: Dentists, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). Preferred Experience: Completion of a GPR , AEGD program or 5 years' experience in dentistry Minimum 3 years of clinical experience, with preference for prior VA or public health experience. Strong knowledge of VA Community Care policies and dental eligibility criteria. Prior experience managing dental referrals or working within a managed care or public health setting. Familiarity with VA's electronic health record systems (e.g., CPRS, VistA, or Cerner). Experience with quality assurance and performance improvement in dental care. It is comprised of complex managerial, clinical care coordination, and administrative components. Exercises knowledge of Mission Act eligibility criteria, Office of Community Care Consult Directive, Consult toolbox (CTB) and Decision Support Tool (DST) functions and operation, Health Share Record Manager (HSRM), VA North Texas VA Health Care System (VANTXHCS) clinical care agreement, and Third-Party Administrator (TPA) contractual obligations per OCC agreement. Utilizes a combination or clinical and leadership experience to manage and direct complex care outsourced to community vendors through purposed guided clinical and administrative oversight and adherence to established standard episodes of care (SEOC) and requests for services (RFS) process to ensure all authorized care is within VA healthcare. Works in collaboration with Community Care Services (CCS) to provide guidance to the VA North Texas VA Healthcare System clinical staff as it relates to dental service community care and policy, procedure, and directive updates. Advises administrative staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Uses pre-established guidelines and criteria to perform review activities assuring appropriate and timely utilization of VA Community Care services in office and network. Serves as a consultant for CCS patients and recommends and facilitates appropriate referrals for alternate levels of care; communicates with the CCS members who schedule community care appointments in accordance with Mission Act guidelines. Assists with clinical issues of the CCS Program such as 38 U. S. C. 1703 Authorized Care referrals Analyzes data and reports information to identify the need for change that may include the need to maximize effective resource utilization, minimize risk and ensure effectiveness of clinical quality improvement. Oversees the entering of routine and Secondary Authorizations Request (SAR) consults are correct and completed by the dental staff. Creates consults as needed. Schedules and performs exams that is necessary to approve, modify or deny complex treatment request from Community Care vendor and/or directed by the Dental Service Chief. Schedules, performs exams, provide treatment and answer consults to Veteran as directed by the Dental Service Chief. Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Administer local anesthesia. Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work. Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures. Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm Telework: Ad-hoc per agency direction Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
