Job Description:

This position is located at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, IN supporting Community Based Outpatient Centers, Outpatient surgery and medicine clinics. The position is responsible for providing essential clinical and administrative support across multiple disciplines, ensuring seamless patient care and clinic operations. This role demands adaptability and dedication to patient service and expediting the care and treatment of patients while maintaining safe and therapeutic environment.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience working in a busy outpatient setting, providing efficient and high-quality care to a diverse patient population. Proficiency in assisting with urology procedures, including catheterizations, cystoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Experience in podiatry clinic settings, such as assisting with foot and ankle care, minor surgical procedures, and the application of dressings and orthotic devices. Familiarity with rheumatology practices, assisting with joint injections. Skilled in supporting cardiology clinics, including performing EKGs. Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients, families, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment and maintain meticulous attention to detail. Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems and other medical documentation software. Specific duties and responsibilities include: 1. Makes observations and thoroughly documents care and the patient's response. Appropriately seeks assistance and guidance by informing the appropriate medical provider of changes in the patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. 2. The Health Technician performs, reports, and records assigned nursing care in the Specialty Care Clinics. 3. Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance, and effectively performs supportive tasks as directed when appropriate. 4. Based on the patient's goals, provides patient and family health education, after initiated by provider or Registered Nurse, to include self-management, prevention, and wellness. 5. Interacts and communicates appropriately with patients and family members. 6. Teaches patients and family members to necessity of continuing proper health care. Provides follow-up care instructions and demonstrations for patients. Counsels on health subjects including nutrition, care of minor injuries and illnesses, and home care. 7. Adheres to principles of infection control, safety, and universal precautions. 8. Incumbent possesses knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment. 9. Demonstrates competence utilizing special equipment needed to perform job duties. 10. Supports patient-driven care in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner, using evidence based principles. 11. Promotes patient and personnel safety. Demonstrates competence utilization of Safe Patient Handing equipment. 12. Technically proficient in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties while providing care to variable patient populations. 13. Receives assignments for a variety of difficult examinations. Understands and carries out the request made by the health care professional. Monitors patients for adverse reactions and takes corrective action based on established policy and past experience. Records results and ensures that they are made part of the permanent medical record. 14. Provides orientation/training to staff regarding equipment or instruments used by position. 16. Provide coverage in laboratory and will be responsible for receiving and preparing requests for testing and specimens. Verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request. Follows procedures for collecting and processing specimens. 17. Performs other duties as directed or assigned within the Health Technician's scope of practice.
