Job Description:
The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia is distinct among United States Attorney's Offices due to the breadth and scale of its work. It acts as both the local and the federal prosecutor for the nation's capital. Locally, it handles cases ranging from misdemeanor drug possession to murders, while federally, it handles cases ranging from child pornography to gang, financial fraud, and terrorism. The Office represents the district in civil suits.
To be qualified for the GS-11 Legal Administrative Specialist, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service; or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related; or a combination of specialized experience and education. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as applying the knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of legal research and analysis sufficient to perform assigned duties concerning analyzing criminal history. Examples of such experience are: using automated criminal history databases; analyzing criminal history information; conducting research concerning criminal charges and systems; performing a variety of automated support necessary in preparing cases for charging. OR Education: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR Combining Education and Experience: a combination of specialized experience and education which when combined equal 100% of the requirements. Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of 2 full years. If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team located in the Early Case Assessment Section, Superior Court Division of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia. You will be responsible for assisting the prosecuting attorneys with intake matters on a daily basis, such as locating defendants, paperwork, case jackets, validity of warrants, and criminal history data. Tour of Duty: The incumbent will be responsible for performing assignments in-person Monday through Friday starting as early as 6:00 a.m. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to work Saturdays and holidays on a rotational basis. Typical work assignments will include: - Utilizes the national computer generated database system to determine whether individual arrested has pending criminal cases in any federal, state, local or foreign jurisdiction; - Performs intake/papering (arraignment) assignments to identify and determine the true name, identify, location and police charges lodged against individuals arrested; - Notifies appropriate authorities regarding prisoner transfers between the juvenile, adult, and District Court cellblocks; - Provides attorneys with reports containing all outstanding warrants, pending cases, probation, or parole status, criminal history pertaining to the defendant, witnesses and victims; - Examines information and determining whether the individual arrested is wanted by any jurisdiction for an indictable offense, or whether a defendant is on conditional release at the time of arrest.
